General Foot Pain

General Foot Pain

Our Podiatrists are trained to assess and treat many different foot pains.

Neuroma

Neuroma is a term to describe the thickening of a nerve or a small growth of nerve tissue. A “Morton’s Neuroma” is the most common Neuroma known in the foot, commonly found between the third and fourth Metatarsal. However, they can occur in any intermetatarsal space. Neuromas often occur due to compression or irritation of the nerve due to footwear, foot structure and biomechanics.

Bursitis

Bursae are small sacs of fluid which act as cushion. They are often positioned between joints, muscles and tendons. These bursae become inflamed through poor mechanics and overloading. An inflamed Bursa is known as Bursitis.

Plantar Plate Tear

The plantar plate is a strong ligament that runs from the Metatarsal head to the base of the Proximal phalanx of all digits. Small tears can occur in these ligaments often due to poor mechanics. Once these tears occur, you might notice the toes drifting towards the toe next to it, and you may even notice the toe slightly elevated.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones. As the cartilage breaks down, the joints can become painful, swollen and “stiff”. Many factors such as age, genetics, gender, muscle strength, joint injury or trauma, overuse and obesity can all the effect rate of progression and severity of Osteoarthritis.

Systemic Arthropathies

Systemic Arthropathies such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis, can impact a person’s foot through joint changes resulting in altered foot structure, pain, and nail changes, just to name a few.

Digit Deformities

Digit deformities often occur due to poor biomechanics, muscular imbalances and joint changes. Some of the most common digit deformities podiatrists see include Claw Toes, Hammer Toes, and Mallet Toes.
