Bunions
Bunions
- Bunions, also known as Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV) is a term to describe the prominence seen medially at the 1st Metatarsophalangael Joint (MPJ).
- Often you will notice a bony prominence near the base of the big toe, and commonly the big toe drifting towards the littler toes.
- Bunions are a progressive condition, starting mild and in some cases progressing to severe.
- Often early intervention can slow the progression.
Podiatry role in bunions:
- Orthotics to slow the rate of further progression and to offload current joint position.
- Gentle mobilisation to keep joint moving as best as possible.
- Footwear education to ensure the fit is correct for your widening foot.
- Discuss conservative vs surgical options.
- Debridement of hard callus that often forms from the altered gait pattern due to the lack of range of motion through the 1st MPJ.
