Bunions

Bunions

  • Bunions, also known as Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV) is a term to describe the prominence seen medially at the 1st Metatarsophalangael Joint (MPJ).
  • Often you will notice a bony prominence near the base of the big toe, and commonly the big toe drifting towards the littler toes.
  • Bunions are a progressive condition, starting mild and in some cases progressing to severe.
  • Often early intervention can slow the progression.

Podiatry role in bunions:

  • Orthotics to slow the rate of further progression and to offload current joint position.
  • Gentle mobilisation to keep joint moving as best as possible.
  • Footwear education to ensure the fit is correct for your widening foot.
  • Discuss conservative vs surgical options.
  • Debridement of hard callus that often forms from the altered gait pattern due to the lack of range of motion through the 1st MPJ.
